Everetts Corners Road Bridge Replacement

Client

Luzerne County, PA

When the deteriorated 1890 Phoenix Column Truss Bridge carrying Everetts Road over Huntington Creek closed to traffic in 2014, Luzerne County needed a practical replacement to restore safe, reliable access. HUNT partnered with Luzerne County to develop a cost-conscious solution designed for durability, construction efficiency, and low future maintenance.

HUNT developed a practical replacement that balanced safety, durability, construction efficiency, and long-term maintenance needs. The project replaced the aging structure with an 82-foot, single-span prestressed concrete box beam bridge featuring a composite deck, new abutments, scour protection, guide rail, and roadway improvements.

To reduce costs, HUNT designed the crossing with three box beams rather than four and positioned the new abutments behind the existing ones. Retaining the original abutments helped redirect water from excavation areas, limiting the need for costly dewatering and temporary diversion measures. Completed in 2020, the new bridge provides a safer, more durable crossing designed for a 75-year service life while restoring dependable community access.
