Civil engineering gets its name from providing the services essential for civitas, or community. Its arts have enabled all great civilizations, and its practice reaches back at least six thousand years. Then as now, the management of storm water and waterways, the assurance of healthful drinking water, the management and recycling of waste have been its cardinal virtues, providing the possibility for healthy community life and enabling economic development.
